Penguin:  Do 3 requirements including the 2 starred

_____ 1.* Learn basic kitchen safety when baking.

_____ 2.* Taste three different kinds of pie.

 

Otter:  Do 4 requirements including the 2 starred

_____ 1.*  Do Penguin requirement # 1 and 2.

_____ 2.*  Find examples of at least one pie in the following different categories: savory, custard/cream, meat, fruit, breakfast, and nut. Your example can be a real pie or a picture of a pie.  How to they differ in looks and ingredients?

 

Dolphin:  Do 5 requirements including the 2 starred

_____ 1.*  Do Otter requirements #1& 2. Taste five different kinds of pie.

_____ 2.*  Learn about the the history of pies throughout the ages.

 

Butterfly:  Do 6 requirements including the 2 starred

_____ 1.*  Do Dolphin Requirements #1 & 2.

_____ 2.* Learn about types of pies from different countries. Give examples of pies from at least five different countries.

 

Eagle:  Do 7 requirements including the 2 starred

_____ 1.*  Do Butterfly requirements #1 & 2. Taste seven different kinds of pie.

_____ 2.*  Bake at least three different types of pies from scratch.  (Pies made for optional requirements must be in addition to these.)

 

Owls: Do 9 requirements including the two starred.

_____ 1. * Do Eagle requirements #1 & 2

_____ 2. * Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone.  You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge.   If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.

 

Optional Requirements:

 

_____3. Bake a fruit pie.

_____4. Try making a pies with at least two different kinds of crusts (cookie crust, graham cracker crust, pastry crust, etc)

_____5. Take a field trip to a bakery where they make pies.

_____6. Bake a savory or meat pie.

_____7. Participate in a community service project that has something to do with pies. For example, hold a bake sale and donate the money to charity. Give a pie as a gift to the fire department as a thank you. Donate pies to the local homeless shelter.

_____8. Learn about careers that involve pies. For example, pastry chefs, bakers, etc. What kind of education would you need for a career like this? What are the types of hours and average salary?

_____9. Learn the following pastry terms: cut-in, shielding, flute, one-crust pie vs. two-crust pie, tart and turnover.

_____10. Learn a song about pies.

_____11. What are some popular or traditional holiday pies? Bake one for an upcoming holiday.

_____12. Celebrate national PI day. Memorize the first ten digits of the number pi.

_____13. Make three pastry pie crusts from scratch using three different types of oil (lard, butter, vegetable oil, Crisco, coconut oil, etc.) How do the different oils affect the crust? Does the temperature of the oil affect the quality of the crust? Which was your favorite crust?

_____14.  Make a custard or cream pie

_____ 15.  Make a breakfast pie.

_____ 16.  Make a pumpkin, sweet potato, or rutabaga pie.

_____ 17.  Make a meringue pie.
